Mah man, Hemingway (author and dog)
If you have followed me for awhile, you know we have a 6 year old Havanese named Hemingway. As the name suggests, Havanese are from Havana, Cuba. We wanted a name that captured his homeland but were a little worried screaming something like "Castro" at a dog park on Capitol Hill might raise some eyebrows.
We are those crazy dog people. Which is fitting because our dog is crazy. I don't mean, quirky. I mean...he is on Prozac for separation anxiety and escapes most enclosures kind of crazy. Bless it. He is so sweet and so nuts.
I was cleaning out my phone the other day and came across some pics of our trip years ago to Key West and was laughing at how we just HAD to go see Hemingway's House because of our dog. Turns out, it was and is one of my favorite and most inspirational spaces I had ever seen.
Oh my goodness, we are bebes here. (I think this was about 5 years ago?)
One of the things that I find so incredibly appealing about his home in Key West is how lived in it feels. You can literally look at this picture and see him sitting in that chair, and you would think it is pretty comfortable based on cushion size, reading a book. The window is open and the breeze is coming in. The rug is beautiful and simple. It does what rugs do and pulls the room together.
Can we talk about this killer bathroom? This swan and fish tile is everything, yall. It is so fabulous.
The blue walls, chandelier and deep grains of those wood pieces have me swooning. I know they did this for presevation purposes but I also must note how much I love the acrylic boxes over the display items on the buffet. What a fun addition to add to some of your really important pieces to add depth and a sense of importance without adding bulk.
But, when I recently read this I started looking at his Cuban home and about lost my damn mind. LOOK at this! The hunting trophies are grouped to perfection. They aren't too crowded (that shit can get scary, you know) but they aren't too sparse to be like, wow, that's, you know...a random ole head up there on that wall. They command the room. So much so that this room doesn't even need anything on the floor because your eyes immediately go up.
I love what looks like a poster on the right hand side of the wall. It is so tall, it instantly elevates the eye and makes the room appear much taller than it likely is. And the floral chinz chairs add a hint of feminitiy to a very masculine space.
All of the lovely books.....
What's your favorite part of Hemingway's homes? (I didn't even include the stunning images of the outdoor spaces). Don't you feel like it is just collected and timeless?
